Its very name indicates it, Talavera de la Reina, is a city for kings and nobility. The tour starts in Carnicerías Street, at the ceramic sign of Talavera de la Reina and goes along the length and breadth of the first walled enclosure, known as La Villa. From our meeting point and in a first glance, we will discover the importance of this land through its walls and towers albarranas, The Tagus River as the heart of this city, where we can not miss its four famous bridges that combines the before and now of this place. The church of Santa Catalina or the one known as Colegial Santa María la Mayor shows us the importance of Talavera. City of kings: Calos V, Felipe II, the Catholic Kings. Personalities such as Fernando de Rojas, Fray Hernando de Talavera, Father Juan de Mariana or Cervantes himself, lived and wrote about this land.
The visitor will know our main square, the Plaza del Pan and our commercial square La Plaza del Reloj, where the good gastronomy and its vibrant atmosphere mark the rhythm of the city.
Talavera de la Reina is known as the “City of Ceramics”, a deep-rooted activity with a great tradition since the foundation of this town. The quality of its pottery and its unique style made it the tableware and decoration of the palaces of kings and aristocracy. Talavera pottery has sailed the seas to shine all over the world and its technique of elaboration has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The city is an open-air museum and its streets are adorned with impressive ceramic murals that tell stories about our traditions, rites and festivities. For that reason, you should not miss a visit to our Ruíz de Luna Ceramic Museum, where accompanied by your tour guide, you will discover spectacular pieces that have been housed there since the 16th century and that are the basis of today's ceramics.
