During the Second World War, the church served as a hospital for the wounded from October 1944 to March 1945. In November 2013, the church was among those that were heavily damaged, but even so, the same still became the refuge of several survivors. The church grounds also served as the last resting place of those who perished because of the typhoon. Pope Francis himself visited the Cathedral on Janaury 17, 2015 and blessed the grave site where the victims of Typhoon Yolanda were buried. It is also in the same year, 2015 that the Palo Cathedral was declared as one of the pilgrim churches of the archdiocese by Archbishop John F. Du.

The iconic San Juanico Bridge spans across the islands of Leyte and Samar, connecting Tacloban City to the town of Santa Rita, Samar. At a length of 2.6 kilometers, it held the title of the longest bridge in the Philippines until the opening of the new Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) on April 27, 2022. Constructed during the Marcos Administration in 1969, the bridge was originally named the “Philippine-Japan Friendship Bridge” as it was funded through Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans. However, there are assertions that its construction was not solely for public benefit but also as a gift from the late president to his wife, Imelda Marcos, a Tacloban native. An enduring urban legend surrounding the San Juanico Bridge suggests that its foundation was somehow associated with a mysterious and macabre origin involving the blood of children.
