Name comes from the Aboriginal word bondi (“water breaking over rocks”), tied to local Indigenous groups like the Gadigal and Bidjigal people. Became public land in 1882 after EB O’Brien opened the estate; by 1929 roughly 60,000 visitors frequented it on summer weekends, and its pavilion was inaugurated that year. Site of the infamous “Black Sunday” in 1938, when large waves tragically caught beachgoers off guard.
