What you can expect
I'm Céline. I was born in Alsace and have been a resident of Strasbourg for over 20 years. After almost exactly as many years in the food industry (marketing & communication), I am now a freelancer in the tourism industry. I would describe myself as a sweet tooth with a passion for baking and pastry, a former food blogger, and I also do occasional catering. I am a food trotter, bilingual, and I also like to travel in Germany and explore the neighboring countries. Also check out my classic food tour of Strasbourg!
If you have visited the Old Town and still have some time left, then a walk through Strasbourg's New Town is worthwhile. Interested in history, eclectic architecture and gastronomy? Then this tour is perfect for you! Stroll through the German Kaiserviertel while learning about its history and combine the discovery with a culinary city tour.
The Neustadt (“New City”) is the district located northeast of the Old Town, which was built after the Prussian takeover of Alsace in 1871. As the capital of the new German imperial province of Alsace-Lorraine, Strasbourg became a political and administrative center as well as a city of culture, art, and knowledge. Imposing and magnificent administrative buildings, mansions and private hotels, facades decorated with sculptures, long and wide avenues… This district offers a mix of Neoclassical, Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Gothic buildings, which nevertheless form a beautiful ensemble.
During this tour, you can admire Parisian-style front gardens, amazing Art Nouveau buildings, and details. As a historical and last architectural witness to the late 19th century, the district has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2017.
The most historically significant and well-known buildings and places of interest include the Palais du Rhin (Imperial Palace) and the University Library on the Place de la République (the former Kaiserplatz), the Avenue de la Liberté (Strasbourg's Champs-Élysées), the Church of St. Paul, the Palais Universitaire (University), and the Botanical Garden.
