What you can expect
A Journey Through Prehistoric Landscapes, Chalk Downland & Cathedral Cities
This 124-mile (198 km) linear journey explores one of the most historically layered landscapes in England. From honey-coloured Wiltshire villages to vast prehistoric monuments, chalk downland and cathedral cities, this route connects thousands of years of history into one coherent road trip.
Best enjoyed over 3–5 days, with flexibility to shape it across 3–10+ days, the drive unfolds in three distinct stages — each revealing a different chapter of Ancient Wessex.
Rather than presenting isolated heritage sites, this guide links them into a structured progression, showing how the landscape changes from West Wiltshire villages to open downland and finally the monumental heart of Salisbury Plain.
1) Castle Combe, Lacock & West Wiltshire — Village Heritage & Abbey Landscapes
The journey begins in western Wiltshire with the picture-perfect streets of Castle Combe before continuing to Lacock Abbey, one of England’s most atmospheric medieval sites.
Bradford-on-Avon’s riverside setting and Corsham’s Georgian architecture add architectural depth. This opening section provides a gentle visual gateway before the landscape opens into ancient chalk hills.
2) Avebury, White Horses & The Ridgeway — Britain’s Oldest Road
Moving east into the North Wessex Downs, the route reaches Avebury stone circle and Silbury Hill — vast prehistoric monuments set within open farmland.
Sections of The Ridgeway trace one of Britain’s oldest routeways, while the iconic Wiltshire White Horses appear carved into the hillsides. Caen Hill Locks, Marlborough and Pewsey offer canal scenery and traditional market-town character.
3) Stonehenge & Salisbury Plain — Monumental Prehistory
The final section crosses Salisbury Plain to Stonehenge, one of the world’s most recognisable prehistoric sites.
Nearby Old Sarum reveals earlier settlement layers, before the journey concludes in Salisbury, where the cathedral spire rises above medieval streets and water meadows.
Each section opens with scene-setting commentary explaining how the landscape evolves — from village heritage to chalk downland to monumental prehistory. Clear route progression, time-based guidance and overnight stay suggestions support both night-by-night travel and strategic bases.
This is a self-guided road-trip guidebook — not a tour and not live navigation. It provides structure and planning clarity while allowing you to travel at your own pace.
Follow the full route or explore individual sections to suit your timeframe. The framework is done for you; the experience remains your own.
With 12 months of access included, choose a booking date that allows time to plan before your trip, as access begins from the date selected at checkout.
