Kala’a Chenini is a fortified Amazigh mountain settlement in southeastern Tunisia, near the town of Chenini in the Tataouine Governorate. Dating back to the late 12th century CE, the site was scouted in December 1995 during the Episode I reconnaissance in Tunisia, where it was considered as a potential visual inspiration for the Mos Espa spaceport environment. Today, it is a prominent heritage destination, renowned for its whitewashed Al-Farajeen Mosque and its dramatic hilltop setting. However, its remote location, steep access roads, and steady tourist traffic would have made large-scale film adaptations logistically challenging. In a nod to its real-world significance, the name "Chenini" has been used since 2015 for one of Tatooine’s fictional moons, alongside Guermessa and Ghomrassen, all tied to the orbital system around the city of Tataouine.

Ksar Hadada is one of the most important Star Wars filming locations in southern Tunisia. It was used in Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) as part of the Mos Espa slave quarters, where young Anakin Skywalker lived with his mother, Shmi Skywalker. The distinctive multi-level ghorfas (traditional Amazigh granary chambers) provided the unique architecture seen in Mos Espa. Several scenes featuring Qui-Gon Jinn, Shmi Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala were filmed here.

This traditional fortified granary (ksar) was transformed into the planet Tatooine. It represents the Mos Espa slave quarters—the rugged streets, passageways, and background alleyways surrounding the home of young Anakin Skywalker and his mother, Shmi.
