What you can expect

  • Walk through the heart of Soweto with a local Sowetan guide on a four-hour, easy-paced tour that blends history, culture and food. Your tour starts at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, where you will learn about the 1976 Soweto Uprising and walk down Moema Street, retracing the route of the historic march.

Continue to Vilakazi Street, a street that has been home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners. Pass Nelson Mandela's former house (entry is optional and paid on the day) and Desmond Tutu's house, just steps away.

Stop for lunch at a neighbourhood shop and try a kota, Soweto's famous stuffed quarter-loaf, included in your price. Then ride a local minibus taxi to Orlando East and the Orlando Towers, before walking through the Nomzamo Park informal settlement to see everyday life for many residents today.

Your guide grew up in the area, so you will hear personal stories and meet locals along the way. The tour runs as a small group or as a private tour for your own group.
