What you can expect

The Battle of the Somme has become a symbol of the horrors of industrialized warfare in the early 20th century, and this tour gives you a look back at its legacy. Spend a day exploring the site of the Western Front's largest battle, where more than a million soldiers were wounded, captured, or killed.

You start the day in the countryside around Villers-Bretonneux, where a battle in 1918 saw history's first clash between tanks. Pay your respects at the memorial to Australian soldiers who fought in the war before you move on through the Somme river valley to visit the sites of the infamous battle itself.

At La Boisselle, you get a look at the artificial crater of the Lochnager mine, created by British forces who tunneled under the German lines. See the memorials at Pozières and Thiepval, dedicated to the 72,000 British and South African soldiers who have no known graves, and then finish the day at Beaumont-Hamel with a tour of the preserved trenches at Newfoundland Memorial Park and some free time to visit the Museum of the Great War in Péronne.
