What you can expect

The walk begins at the statue of the Fisher Boy in the heart of the city – a symbol of Ålesund's close connection to the sea and the fishing industry. Along the waterfront, you will learn how the city has evolved from the center of the Norwegian salted and dried cod trade to a vibrant coastal city on the Atlantic.

This close connection to the sea still shapes Ålesund today – particularly evident in Norway's impressive infrastructure, such as tunnels deep under the sea, the world's first cruise tunnel, and other engineering visions on the coast. In this context, we will also talk about the Norwegian oil and gas industry, its importance to the country, and how the population benefits from the resulting revenues.

We will then stop at a small café, where we will take a short break and talk about the topics that are of particular interest to you. Afterwards, we will focus on Ålesund's unique Art Nouveau cityscape. After the city fire of 1904, the entire city center was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style within a few years – today, it is one of the most cohesive and impressive examples of this architecture in Europe. Art Nouveau is particularly visible on the Königsstraße, where we will place the architecture of Ålesund in its historical context.

To finish, depending on the weather, we will either visit a vantage point in the heart of the city (not the Aksla with its 418 steps!) or a small shop with local delicacies, where we can sample regional cheeses and cold meats. There will be time for questions, discussions, and personal recommendations on restaurants, cafés, and places that locals also like to visit. You will also receive a digital brochure with valuable information and recommendations for the rest of your stay in Alesund.

The group size is deliberately kept small to ensure a calm and personal atmosphere. Private tours for up to 4 people can be flexibly arranged.

Note for cruise guests: The starting point and ending point are just a few minutes' walk from the cruise port. The tour is coordinated with the ships' docking times and is a perfect shore excursion – a quick look at your onboard schedule is all you need.
