Leave the crowds behind and experience the peaceful side of Montenegro on a guided boat cruise through the breathtaking Skadar Lake National Park.
Your journey begins in the charming fishing village of Virpazar, where you'll cruise through the narrow channels of the Crmnica River before reaching the vast open waters of Skadar Lake. As the scenery unfolds, enjoy panoramic views of the lake stretching toward Albania and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Passing beneath the historic Belgrade–Bar railway bridge, you'll admire the legendary Lesendro Fortress, one of the most important historical landmarks on Skadar Lake. The fortress was built long before the reign of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, who later strengthened it and used it in the defence of Montenegro. After the Ottomans captured Lesendro in 1843, Njegoš made several unsuccessful attempts to reclaim it, inspiring the famous Montenegrin saying, “He longs for it like the Bishop longs for Lesendro,” a phrase still used today to describe someone who deeply desires something that remains out of reach. The cruise then continues along the Morača River, offering views of Vranjina, the largest island on Skadar Lake.
As you navigate through peaceful reed-lined waterways, you'll enter one of the lake's richest bird habitats. Watch for great crested grebes, grey herons, cormorants and many other bird species that thrive in this protected national park. Depending on the season, the landscape transforms into a floating garden filled with water lilies, white lotuses and vibrant aquatic vegetation, creating one of the lake's most photogenic scenes.
Your local guide will share fascinating stories about the lake's history, wildlife and unique ecosystem while you relax and enjoy complimentary local wine, juice and water served on board.
The cruise continues past the picturesque islands of Mala Čakovica, Velika Čakovica and Kamenik, where untouched nature and spectacular views create unforgettable photo opportunities. Before returning to Virpazar, you'll have the chance to swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake—the perfect way to refresh yourself and complete an authentic Skadar Lake experience.
