Cambodian cuisine is the least-understood of Asian cuisines by westerners and probably the least-tasted outside of the Kingdom of Wonder. While Thai and Vietnamese food is widely recognized, Khmer food is mostly a mystery to visitors.

Heavily influenced by locally-sourced ingredients like freshwater fish from the Tonle Sap, sugar cane and coconut, Khmer cuisine is a little less fiery than other south east Asian national cuisines. It has its share of surprises too, and the Khmer script, while beautiful, can make menus difficult to navigate.
