The Mayan Q'ueqchi' ethnic believes that the Lanquin Caves are a sacred place. This was used to perform Mayan ceremonies in the past and even nowadays, they are still used for that purpose from time to time. For the Mayans, the entrance to the infraworld is the caves. In Lanquin, the cave system is around 11 km long, and only around 3+ km have been explored and studied.
