Day 1: Semarang to Borobudur and Yogyakarta
Your adventure begins with a pick-up in Semarang. A scenic drive south takes you to the monumental Borobudur Temple, the world's largest Buddhist sanctuary. You'll spend the afternoon exploring this 8th-century marvel, marveling at its intricate stone carvings and ascending its nine platforms. After this profound cultural experience, the drive continues to the vibrant city of Yogyakarta, where you'll check into your hotel and rest.
Day 2: Prambanan and the Race to Bromo
Day two starts with an early checkout from your Yogyakarta hotel. Your first stop is the towering Hindu complex of Prambanan, a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll spend the morning among the temple's soaring spires and elaborate carvings.
Following the temple visit, the adventure shifts east with a substantial overland transfer to the Mount Bromo area in East Java. This long drive strategically positions you for the iconic volcanic experience early the next morning. You will check into your accommodation near the volcano, typically in Cemoro Lawang, and rest up for the pre-dawn start.
Day 3: Bromo Sunrise and Eastward to Ijen
The third day begins with a pre-dawn wake-up. A 4x4 jeep will take you across the vast Sea of Sand to a viewpoint, like Penanjakan Hill, for a spectacular Bromo sunrise over the ethereal landscape of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park.
After sunrise, you descend into the caldera to approach Mount Bromo. You can trek or ride a horse across the Sea of Sand, followed by climbing the 250 steps to gaze into the smoking crater rim—a visceral experience of Earth’s power. After breakfast, the final major road journey begins. You will drive from the Bromo region east to the area around Bondowoso or Banyuwangi, preparing for the intense midnight trekking challenge at Ijen.
Day 4: Ijen Blue Fire and Arrival in Bali
Day four demands a unique midnight start with a midnight trekking excursion to Ijen Crater. After a two-hour ascent, the reward is witnessing the rare phenomenon of Ijen's famous blue fire.
As dawn breaks, you’ll watch the spectacular sunrise over the world's largest turquoise acidic lake. Following your descent, you’ll transfer directly to the Ketapang ferry port in Banyuwangi. You'll take a short ferry ride across the Bali Strait to Gilimanuk Port on Bali island. As an optional, final private transfer will take you from the port to your chosen accommodation in Bali, marking the successful and exhilarating conclusion of your epic Java overland journey.
