Discover the dramatic landscapes of western São Miguel on this full-day small-group tour, combining volcanic viewpoints, lush nature, rugged coastlines, and iconic crater lakes. Traveling in a comfortable van, you’ll explore some of the island’s most breathtaking locations at a relaxed pace, with time for photos and short walks along the way.
Departing from Ponta Delgada, we begin by ascending the western mountain chain of Sete Cidades, stopping first at Pico do Carvão, where sweeping views stretch across much of São Miguel. We then continue to Lagoa do Canário, a peaceful and lesser-known crater lake surrounded by dense forest. From here, we take a walk of around 20 minutes each way to the spectacular Boca do Inferno, widely considered one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Azores, offering panoramic views over the entire Sete Cidades caldera.
Continuing along the rim of the volcano, we stop at Vista do Rei and Cerrado das Freiras, two iconic viewpoints providing different perspectives over the famous twin lakes of Sete Cidades.
We then enjoy a traditional buffet lunch included in the tour, served at a local restaurant and featuring a main dish, drink, dessert, and coffee.
In the afternoon, the tour follows the rugged west coast, stopping at Miradouro do Escalvado for impressive ocean views before descending to the coastal village of Mosteiros. Here, you’ll take a short walk along the coastline to admire the striking lava rock formations and natural swimming pools.
The journey continues along the island’s northern coast, with stops at a couple of lesser-known but stunning viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and offering views of rugged cliffs and sea caves. Along the way, we pass through the towns of Rabo de Peixe and Ribeira Grande, with insights into local life and history.
The day concludes at Lagoa do Fogo, one of São Miguel’s most beautiful and well-preserved crater lakes, located in the island’s protected central highlands.
