What you can expect

  • Discover Santo Domingo through the food that is part of the daily life of its residents. On this walking tour, you'll enjoy Dominican food, juices, sweets, fruits, and other small food tastings while visiting shops, markets, and streets where locals shop, eat, and go about their daily lives.

It won't be a string of restaurants or a food tasting prepared solely for visitors. We'll share food in down-to-earth, lively places, surrounded by the city's authentic atmosphere. I'll explain what you're tasting, how foods are typically paired, and what you can look for later on during your trip.

This experience works equally well whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends: the small group size allows for conversation, questions, and exploring the city at a comfortable pace.

We'll start near Parque Rosado with a full meal at an eatery frequented by people who work and live in the area. This first stop gives you an insight into what an everyday Dominican meal is like and lets you see the variety available during the day.

We'll then visit a shop that stocks sweets, drinks, and products from different parts of the country. You'll be able to sample some flavors while we talk about the ingredients, regional specialties, and products that Dominicans typically buy, give as gifts, or take with them when they travel.

We'll then head to Chinatown, where we'll make a short stop to eat and learn how the Chinese community became part of the commercial and culinary life of Santo Domingo.

The route continues around the Mercado Modelo. Although the building is now known for its souvenir shops, the most interesting food-related activity continues in the nearby streets. There, we'll see fruits, vegetables, groceries, herbs, spices, and seasonings used in Dominican cuisine, and we'll also taste fruits depending on the day's availability.

We'll finish by walking along El Conde Street. Beyond the recent restaurants aimed at tourists, you'll discover some of the places and types of businesses where Dominicans used to eat before the Zona Colonial's transformation into a tourist destination. You'll also get personal recommendations to continue exploring local food after the tour.

The experience follows the same route and has the same purpose at its different times. The selection of foods may vary depending on the time of day, freshness, and availability, allowing us to offer products suitable for each time of day without turning it into separate experiences.

This is a local food tour, not a gourmet or luxury experience. We'll visit simple eateries and bustling shopping areas. The value lies in trying the food in its context, gaining a better understanding of everyday life in Santo Domingo, and finishing the tour with more confidence to continue eating local food on your own.
