What you can expect
Begin your day in Samarkand, where your driver will escort you to the Tajikistan border — a gateway into a land of deep history and dramatic landscapes. After crossing (approximately one hour), meet your local Tajik guide and set off on a captivating journey into Penjikent, a city where poetry, ruins, and living tradition converge.
Your first stop is Sarazm, one of Central Asia’s oldest known settlements with over 5,500 years of history. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sarazm offers a rare glimpse into early urban life along ancient Silk Road routes.
Next, delve into the literary soul of Tajikistan at the Rudaki Museum, honoring the birthplace of Abu Abdullah Rudaki, revered as the father of Persian poetry. Nearby, wander through the lively local bazaar and a neighborhood mosque — a sensory immersion into everyday Tajik life.
Then, step back into the 5th century at the ruins of ancient Penjikent, a once-thriving Sogdian city. Explore the remnants of Zoroastrian fire temples, crumbling homes, and the old citadel, where echoes of a lost civilization still linger among the stones.
In the afternoon, trade history for nature as you drive into the western Fann Mountains toward the legendary Seven Lakes — a hidden jewel of Tajikistan. Each lake reveals a different hue, shifting from serene turquoise to rich sapphire to deep violet. At Hazorchashma, the highest and final lake, enjoy a peaceful picnic lunch at 14:00, surrounded by towering peaks and still waters.
After soaking in the beauty of this mountain wonderland, return to the border and drive back to Samarkand, your heart full of stories — both ancient and awe-inspiring.
