Perched on the hill of Montmartre, overlooking Paris, it is hard to miss Sacré Coeur. Since it was built over a century ago, it has become the symbol of Montmartre – of its defiance in the face of the enemy, of its unique bohemian atmosphere, of its popularity amongst the faithful and the hordes of tourists who visit.

Today Sacré Cœur is the 2nd most visited monument in Paris, with 11 million visitors annually (surpassed only by Notre-Dame!). It was planned as a monument of penance to mark the nation’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.

Its unusual architecture, styled in the Neo-Byzantine fashion, makes Sacre-Coeur unique within Paris. Furthermore, its location at the summit of the hill provides visitors with the opportunity to see the city from high above.
