The route begins in Casperia, a medieval village whose spiral structure testifies to the ancient Sabine fortification, perched for defense and control of the valleys below. Cycling north, you reach the “twins” of Sabina: Rocchette and Rocchettine. These two opposing villages evoke the centuries-old feudal struggles; while the former is still inhabited, the ghost village of Rocchettine, with its ruined medieval fortress and fortifications, offers a crystallized image of the abandoned late Middle Ages. The route then continues towards the valley, leading to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Vescovio, the ancient Roman Forum Novum. This place is the spiritual heart of Sabina: the present-day 12th-century Romanesque cathedral stands on Roman and early Christian remains, preserving frescoes of the Roman school of inestimable historical value. Here, in the shadow of the monuments that marked the transition from paganism to Christianity, you can enjoy a packed lunch in a peaceful atmosphere. The return to Casperia passes through landscapes that preserve the territory's centuries-old agricultural vocation, concluding an itinerary that intertwines Roman archaeology, medieval fortifications, and millennia-old spirituality.
