The Nikolaiviertel in the Mitte district of Berlin is the oldest settlement area in the capital. Almost completely destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1980–1987 by architect Günter Stahn on behalf of the East Berlin magistrate on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city.
