What you can expect
Your adventure begins at the Riisitunturi National Park gate—or we can pick you up from Ruka or Kuusamo center. With snowshoes on, you’ll follow your guide into a snow-covered forest, where the only soundtrack is the crunch of snow. Depending on conditions, you’ll wander along marked trails or make fresh tracks through untouched snow.
As we climb higher, the views open up. Riisitunturi’s famous “snow monsters”—trees heavy with thick layers of snow called tykky. Your local Finnish guide will share stories about the area’s nature, wildlife, and life in Lapland.
Because this is a private tour, the route and pace are tailored entirely to you. Whether you want a calm, gentle walk, plenty of time for photography, or a slightly longer adventure, we shape the journey to your wishes. Expect 4–6 km of snowshoeing on moderately easy terrain. The tour lasts 3–4 hours depending on weather and your chosen route, plus transfers.
We offer a wide range of start times throughout the day. If you’d love to catch the glow of sunrise, book an early departure. If sunset is more your style, choose an afternoon tour for warm light and long shadows across the snow. Night tours in Riisitunturi are amazing under the northern lights or full moon.
In January, the magical blue light surrounds you and you can admire the landscape in that special pastel winter light. In February, we start to get more sunlight and days get longer. In March, experience spring winter time when the sun begins to drop the snow off the trees—but it’s the best time for longer hikes. Then you have long days, sun, snow, and even more snow.
We provide snowshoes and poles for everyone, and depending on the departure time, we’ll also give you a headlamp. Sunrise hikes begin in soft twilight, and sunset tours may end as twilight settles over the fell. On night tours, we often don’t need headlamps at all—on clear nights, the moon or even the northern lights can light up the entire landscape. When that happens it's pure Lapland Magic!
During the tour, we’ll take a break by a campfire where your guide makes crepes/pancakes and you'll get a warm drink made from wild berries to keep you warm. If you have any dietary needs, just let us know in advance. For every campfire we make, we also plant a tree—our small way of giving back to nature.
To make the most of your time outdoors, please dress warmly in winter clothing. Let us know in advance if you’d like to rent winter clothing. It’s also a good idea to bring a backpack—just tell us if you need to borrow one. Pack an extra layer to stay warm during breaks, and feel free to bring a drink or snack for yourself.
This private snowshoe hike offers the time, space, and freedom to enjoy winter in its purest form. Whether you’re a couple seeking a magical moment, a family wanting quality time together, or a photographer chasing perfect light, Riisitunturi delivers beauty, peace, and pure Lapland wonder.
