What you can expect

Your adventure begins at the Riisitunturi National Park gate—or we can pick you up from Ruka or Kuusamo. With snowshoes on, you’ll follow your guide into a snow-covered forest, where the only sound is the crunch of snow. Depending on the snow conditions, we’ll follow marked trails or gently make our own way through untouched snow.

Wander around with snowshoes, follow trails, and find your way through deep snow. As we climb higher, the views open up. Riisitunturi’s famous “snow monsters”—trees heavy with thick layers of snow—stand like silent sculptures all around. Your local Finnish guide will share stories about the area’s nature, wildlife, and local life in the Arctic.

This is a private tour, so the route and pace are fully adapted to you. Whether you’re looking for a calm walk with scenic views or a bit more of a challenge, we’ll tailor the experience to your wishes. The total distance covered on snowshoes is usually between 4 to 8 kilometers. The terrain is moderately easy and no snowshoeing experience needed. The tour lasts between 3 to 6 hours, depending on the weather and your preferences. This includes the hiking time and transfers. Transfers from Ruka village or Kuusamo center are included, or you can meet us directly at the Riisitunturi National Park gate.

We offer a wide range of start times throughout the day. If you’d love to catch the glow of sunrise, book an early departure. If sunset is more your style, choose an afternoon tour for warm light and long shadows across the snow.

In January, the magical blue light surrounds you and you can admire the magical landscape in that special winter light. In February, start to get more sunlight and in March, experience spring winter time when the sun begins to drop the snow off the trees—but it’s the best time for longer hikes. Then you have long days, sun, snow, and even more snow.

We provide you snowshoes and poles, and depending on the departure time, we’ll also provide a headlamp—sunrise hikes begin at twilight and sunset hikes may end as twilight settles in. During the tour, we’ll take a break by a cozy campfire where you’ll enjoy a warm drink made from wild berries and a trail snack. If you have any dietary needs, just let us know in advance.

For every campfire we make, we also plant a tree—our small way of giving back to nature.

To make the most of your time outdoors, please dress warmly in winter clothing. Let us know in advance if you’d like to rent gear. It’s also a good idea to bring a backpack—just tell us if you need to borrow one. Pack an extra layer to stay warm during breaks, and feel free to bring a drink or snack for yourself.

Whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends or family, this snowshoe hike offers you time and space to experience winter in its purest form. Join us and discover why Riisitunturi is one of Lapland’s most cherished national parks—beautiful, peaceful, and full of winter magic.
