What you can expect
Hike through Madeira's impressive and ancient Laurel Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its exceptional biodiversity and magical atmosphere.
This popular tour takes you along two of Madeira's most beautiful levadas, the traditional irrigation channels that are now used as quiet and picturesque hiking trails, and leads you to the fascinating 25 springs and the spectacular Risco Waterfall, which is over 100 meters high. The waterfall plunges into a tranquil natural pool and forms one of the most impressive natural experiences on the island.
The trail offers wonderful views of lush green valleys and wild, romantic landscapes, allowing hikers to immerse themselves deeply in a true natural paradise. Along the way, you will encounter dense vegetation, moss-covered trees, and numerous endemic species of plants and animals typical of this rare subtropical laurel forest. The combination of running water, small waterfalls, crystal-clear natural pools, and the peaceful atmosphere along the levadas makes this hike one of the most popular experiences in Madeira.
The hike is suitable for most fitness levels and follows typical levada trails, sometimes also through short tunnels, so a flashlight is recommended. The walking time is about 4 to 4.5 hours with a route length of about 9 km, with an elevation gain of about 150 m; the difficulty level is in the easy to moderate range. The tour is a levada hike and is accompanied by English, Portuguese and German-speaking guides.
Far away from mass tourism. Small groups, individual attention, and a guide who takes time for everyone.
Pick-up from: Calheta, Jardim do Mar, Prazeres, and Ponta do Sol.
