Der Munzenberg (Pass by)

A hilltop settlement of sixty-five miniature half-timbered cottages, built from the late 16th century on the ruins of a medieval convent church whose Romanesque columns and arches ended up inside the houses as cellars and living-room walls. It offers a wide view across the valley to the castle hill.

Stiftskirche & Domschatz (Pass by)

The High Romanesque collegiate church of St. Servatius crowns the sandstone Castle Hill, built mainly between 1070 and 1129 on a site tied to the first Ottonian rulers. Queen Mathilde founded a women's collegiate foundation here after King Henry I died in 936, and her sarcophagus is still in the crypt.

Finkenherd (Pass by)

A narrow cobbled lane at the foot of the castle rock, lined by tall timber houses built between 1500 and 1530. Local legend places Henry the Fowler here in 919, catching finches when messengers offered him the crown, though the historical election took place at Fritzlar.

Fachwerkmuseum im Standerbau (Pass by)

A timber-framed house at Wordgasse 3 whose frame has been dendrochronologically dated to 1346-47. It is an example of Hochstanderbau, where continuous vertical posts run from the foundation to the roof rather than stopping at each floor, joined with mortise-and-tenon joints and wooden pegs.

Marktplatz Quedlinburg (Pass by)

Quedlinburg's cobbled market square, overlooked by the ivy-covered sandstone Town Hall first documented in 1310. Beside it stands the small sandstone Roland statue, the traditional symbol of civic rights, smashed in 1477 after the town's defeat by the abbess and reconstructed in 1869.

Marktkirche St. Benedikti (Pass by)

The late Gothic market church just off the main square, first documented in 1233 and funded by Quedlinburg's merchants and burghers. Its asymmetrical twin towers, the taller reaching about sixty metres, were built to announce civic wealth against the abbey on the hill.

Höllenhof (Pass by)

A courtyard complex on the street called Holle, with a quarry-stone facade pierced by Romanesque and Gothic arches hiding a medieval timber core. Its earliest structural timbers date to between 1215 and 1230, making it the oldest surviving secular building in the city.

St Nikolaikirche (Pass by)

Quedlinburg's largest church and the landmark of the Neustadt, begun around 1200 as a Romanesque basilica for a growing settlement of merchants and artisans. Its 72-metre twin west towers rest on timber piles driven into boggy subsoil, which has caused centuries of structural repairs.
