We'll set off early in the morning on the RN3 towards the Punta Tombo Protected Natural Area, about 180 km from the city of Puerto Madryn. This wildlife reserve is the world's largest continental penguin colony of Magellanic penguins, with over 500,000 birds per breeding season.
The first stop will be to visit its interpretive center, a space that provides information about the fauna and flora that characterize the place as well as its different environments. Right here, you can use the restrooms, walk along its interpretive trails such as “The Dome of the Winds,” or enjoy its restaurant with a wide variety of services available.

Once at the penguin colony, you'll literally walk among penguins, watching them enter and exit the water and head to their nests to care for and feed their chicks, depending on the time of year. (See MAGELLANIC PENGUIN REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE). The total route is 3,500 meters, with the possibility of taking breaks on the benches strategically located for this purpose.
Guanacos, choiques, maras, hares, and different species of birds are usually the additional spice to these postcards that will undoubtedly not stop exciting you.
You can combine this excursion with other attractions such as DOLPHIN WATCHING in the port of Rawson, a visit to ISLA ESCONDIDA to see southern elephant seals, WELSH TEA IN GAIMAN, or the EGIDIO FERUGLIO MUSEUM in the city of Trelew.
