Kaymaklı Underground City, located in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey, is one of the largest and most complex of the many underground cities found in this area. Carved out of soft volcanic rock, it dates back to the Hittite era (circa 1200 BCE), but it was expanded and used extensively during Byzantine times, particularly by early Christians seeking refuge from invaders.

The city extends several levels deep, with a network of tunnels and rooms used for various purposes such as living quarters, kitchens, stables, storage rooms, and even wineries. It could accommodate thousands of people for extended periods. Ingenious ventilation systems ensured fresh air throughout the levels, and large stone doors could be rolled into place to block entrances during times of attack.
