What you can expect

Go beyond the postcard images and “read” the ancient villages like a living book. This private journey is designed for those who appreciate architectural depth, Confucian philosophy, and authentic heritage.

■ Xidi: A Living Fossil of Ancestral Wisdom
Your journey begins in Xidi, home to over 140 exceptionally preserved residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Unlike modernized tourist spots, Xidi remains an “original specimen” of Huizhou craftsmanship. Your guide will show you the soaring “Horse-head walls”—a brilliant fire-prevention design that creates a stunning monochrome silhouette against the sky.

We focus on the “Couplet Culture” here. You will decode original inscriptions penned by Qing dynasty scholars, which translate family values like “integrity” and “education” into architectural art. Step inside private halls to see original Ming-style furniture and the “Four Waters Returning to the Hall” drainage system—a Feng Shui masterpiece designed to gather both rainwater and wealth.

■ Hongcun: The Masterpiece of Biomimetic Planning
After a local lunch, we head to Hongcun, a village famous for its incredible “Ox-shaped” water system. Established 900 years ago, the village was designed as a living creature: Leigang Hill is the head, the canals are the intestines, and the central ponds are the stomach.

We will visit Chengzhi Hall, the opulent residence of a grand salt merchant. Known as the “Miniature Imperial Palace,” it features the most intricate wood carvings in China, depicting scenes of ancient myths and daily life. Finally, find tranquility at Nanhu Academy, a lakeside school where you can feel the centuries-old scholarly atmosphere of the Huizhou people.

Throughout the day, your guide will navigate you through quiet lanes to avoid crowds, ensuring you capture clean, high-contrast photos of the iconic white walls and black tiles reflected in the serene lakes.
