Overview

Kyoto is famed for its shrines and temples, which are full of countless unique stories that will astonish you, making you fall in love with and connect yourself to their ancient history. I am deeply fascinated by the living traditions called Geisha or Geiko hidden behind the sliding doors of Gion. The mysterious world of Geisha can seem exclusive and challenging to discover, so on my experience we will take tea break, talking with Maiko, Geisha apprentice and I will reveal the entertainers who adhere to this traditional lifestyle, their history, rituals, and nuances of the art-form.
・At the beginning part we will discuss the living traditions, their lifestyle and history.
・We would announce like “Ladies and gentle men…” and she, Maiko will show up. First we will watch her dancing.
・Then we will talk with and ask her questions, having a cup of tea.

We had an amazing tour guide named Saya, she was incredibly knowledgable, friendly and helped with our holiday recommendations. She was a great support in translating for the Maiko. This was such a highlight of the trip for our family to meet with the Maiko who was friendly, engaging and sharing with her story and experiences. Plus she did two beautiful Geisha dances. Loved everything about this trip, Saya's support and a special meeting with a beautiful Maiko. Thank you again.

Don’t miss! Such a unique opportunity into a rare cultural tradition. Conversation was enlightening and the dance was beautiful. Unforgettable! Ken made us feel comfortable and luckily hunted for us while texting, as we had address trouble.

I cannot express how fantastic this experience was. Our guide Ken met us in one of the Geiko districts and walked us past the theatres and agencies, explaining the history, traditions and customs of the Gekio houses there. He then took us to a cosy theatre for a private show. He went into detail about the format of the shows and the clientele selection processes too, which was all really interesting to learn about. We then met with the Maiko (apprentice Geiko) for the show - despite the language barrier, she was charming and an excellent conversationalist. She gladly answered our questions and we talked for a bit about the lifestyle and day to day routine of a Maiko, as well as the training regimens. After we had a talk, she taught us a party game and we played for a bit. She then performed two traditional dances that were absolutely breathtaking! Finally, we were able to take some photos with the Maiko, then we bid farewell. These two really made the experience special. The Maiko is a credit to her house and Ken is doing amazing work raising awareness and educating tourists on Japan’s rich traditions. Highly, highly recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Ken took me through the geisha district and explained the intricacies of geisha, or geiko, life. I saw the exterior of the houses where they entertain, as well as their agencies that promote them. Then, in one of the houses, a maiko (geiko in training) spoke with me for a while then danced. It was a very unique and interesting experience.
