Founded in the 7th century BC, the city grew from a mix of indigenous, Etruscan, and Greek cultures, leading to impressive fortifications. Over the centuries, Pompeii flourished, especially under Roman rule, but a devastating earthquake in 62 AD left the city in repair. Just 17 years later, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying it under ash.
