What you can expect

Embark on a guided hiking tour to the top of Rio's highest mountain peak, Pico da Tijuca, an astonishing 3,352 feet (1,022 m) tall. Led by knowledgeable guides, the 3.1-mile (5-km) hike passes cascading waterfalls like Cascata Taunay and provides breathtaking views of Rio and Guanabara Bay.

Leave your hotel in the convenience of a comfortable, air-conditioned van and set off to the trailhead in Bom Retiro. Set off on a hike through Tijuca Forest National Park and marvel at the towering trees, lush green landscape, and animals like monkeys and exotic birds. The 1.5-hour journey covers about 3.1 miles (5 km) with an average incline of 14 percent—a generally moderate hike.

Near the mountain's summit, notice a unique stone stairway—said to be from the 1920s. The final steps up to the peak lead to an impressive 360-degree view of Rio lined by the deep blue water of Guanabara Bay.
