What you can expect

Forget postcard Palermo and head to Pizzo Sella, an unfinished hillside district on the edge of Palermo, at the foot of Monte dell’Eremita. Built during years marked by mafia speculation and never truly completed, this area has become one of the clearest symbols of corruption, abuse of land, and the long shadow of criminal power over the city’s development.

Today, its abandoned concrete villas and unfinished structures form a haunting urban shell overlooking Palermo and the sea. Over time, many of these buildings have also been transformed by striking street art, turning the area into a raw open-air urbex setting unlike anything else in the city.

Explore selected abandoned structures, walk through this suspended neighborhood, and discover a different side of Palermo through stories of speculation, landscape destruction, resistance, and transformation. The views are extraordinary, but this is not a polished sightseeing experience. It is an immersive exploration of a broken landscape that still has something powerful to say.

For those who want a longer and more intense route, the experience can be extended in two different ways.

The first option is a hike continuing toward Monte Gallo, with breathtaking views over Mondello and a stop at the hermit’s house, hidden above the coastline.

The second option stays fully within the urbex spirit of the tour. It leads to Addaura, where participants access the sea through a hidden passage inside an abandoned illegal villa built directly on the rocks. This is not a beach stop, and not a classic swimming break. It is a rough, unusual, and visually striking extension for those who want to push the exploration further and experience Palermo’s coastline through one of its most extreme and contradictory spaces.
