Located atop a cliff by the crater of Rano Kau, Orongo is an ancient ceremonial village that was the center of the Tangata Manu, or “Bird Man,” one of Rapa Nui’s most mysterious and fascinating traditions. During the visit, you will walk among finely assembled stone houses and discover petroglyphs depicting Birdman figures, ritual masks and sea deities. From this sacred place you can also see the islets Motu Nui, Motu Iti and Kao Kao, scene of the spiritual competition that defined the new leader of the island.
