The Candlelight Procession is one of the most iconic rituals in Fátima. During the major pilgrimages, which take place almost year-round, this procession carries the image of Our Lady to the altar in the Prayer Enclosure. The procession makes its way through the Prayer Enclosure and returns to the Chapel of the Apparitions. Established in Cova da Iria in the second half of the 1920s, the Candlelight Procession has its origins in and is inspired by the tradition of the Sanctuary of Lourdes, France, and in Fátima, it reminds pilgrims of the symbolism of light, which is an expression of the divine in the Fátima apparitions.
