What you can expect
This 10 day birdwatching journey covers the forested hills of Kathmandu Valley, the grasslands of Chitwan National Park, and the wetland ecosystem of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. Nepal is not only considered as the mountainous country, but it also boasts of more than 850 species of birds and therefore can be classified as one of the best birdwatching sites in South Asia. This tour is appropriate to nature lovers, photographers, researchers, and all those who prefer to spend silent time in the nature.
The journey usually starts with Kathmandu Valley where forested hills like Shivapuri and Phulchoki offer good opportunity to spot a variety of resident and migratory birds. Early morning walks with an experienced bird guide will enable you to see such species as barbets, woodpeckers, laughing thrushes, flycatchers, and many more. The combination of forest and valley habitat provides a rich habitat for birds near the city.
The tour then proceeds to Chitwan National Park in the south lowlands. This area provides a whole different ecosystem in the form of grasslands, riverbanks, and subtropical forests. Chitwan is known for species such as the Bengal florican, hornbills, kingfishers, eagles, herons and many water birds. Canoe rides along the river and guided nature walks enhance the opportunities to see rare and colourful species.
In some itineraries, KoshiTappu Wildlife Reserve is also included. This wetland area in the east of Nepal is particularly popular with serious birdwatchers. It offers habitat for migratory waterfowl and waders as well as many endangered species. During winter months vast numbers of migratory birds arrive from Central Asia and Siberia.
