What you can expect

The National Museum of Singapore, founded in 1887, is the oldest museum in the country. Even though the building looks old and traditional from the outside, the museum uses modern and creative ways to tell stories about Singapore’s history inside.

The museum is an important landmark and shows more than 1,700 artefacts that tell the story of Singapore over the past 700 years. Visitors can explore permanent galleries such as the Singapore History Gallery, Life in Singapore: The Past 100 Years, and the Goh Seng Choo Gallery.

The Singapore History Gallery explains how Singapore changed over time, from its early days as Singapura, to British rule, the Japanese Occupation during World War II, and finally becoming the Singapore we know today. The Life in Singapore Galleries focus on how people lived in the last 100 years, showing daily life, struggles, and memories from different time periods. The Goh Seng Choo Gallery displays detailed drawings of plants and animals from Southeast Asia, helping visitors learn about the region’s natural history.
