What you can expect

  • The guide will wait for you in Piazza Cesare Battisti, near the castle steps. It is an Aragonese fortification used as a palace by the local Barons. The eclectic façade of the castle will surprise you. It is the result of a profound restyling that also involved the adjacent Botanical Garden. A “garden of wonder”, full of romantic corners and rare exotic plants. Explore the Church of S. Giuseppe close to interesting examples of courtyard houses.
Along the way you can admire the Monastery of Santa Chiara, still active today. See the Church of Purità and the former Dominican convent with the church overlooking the small square. Last stop, Piazza delle Legne, today known as Piazza Salandra. See the Fontana del Toro, a “bull. peasant “who digs makes the water gush. The bull is the symbol of the city.
Nardò is also a land of excellent wines, so much so that a legend tells that the god Bacchus stopped in the surrounding forests in Nardò. Here he wanted to plant one of the first vineyards here. Today the area is well known for its taverns.
At the end of the tour, in Salandra square, you will taste the real nectar of the gods. You could taste a selection of wines in the local winery.
