Be the knight or princess of your childhood fairy tales in the Byzantine town of Mystras!

Depart Kalamata and journey for less than 2 hours to the fortified town of Mystras on Mt. Taygetos. Cross the Taygetos mountain range and experience a landscape full of myths and traditions, spectacular ravines, stone tunnels, caves and green forests.

Stop to take photos of Keadas, where, according to the historian Plutarch, the ancient Spartans used to throw their weak and deformed infants into the cavern. Learn the history of Mystras on the way to the site, and then wander among its many monuments and attractions.

Mystras was founded by William II of Villehardouin in the 12th century AD after he captured the last remaining Byzantine outpost on the Morea at Monemvasia. Hear stories about the legendary rulers of Mystras, including the families of Kantakouzenos and Palaeologus who brought glory in the 13th and 14th century AD. Learn about the long wars that followed, and the alternation of the various conquerors.

Wander around the Acropolis at the top of the town, and follow in the footsteps of Byzantine emperors and princesses along the narrow streets. Discover museums that reveal aspects of daily life, and the ruins of monasteries where nuns still live. Go to churches where emperors were enthroned, before time to enjoy some traditional Mediterranean dishes at one of the local restaurants.
