Perkara yang anda boleh jangka

  • Step away from the honking traffic and glass towers of Mumbai and walk into a quieter, greener, much older version of the city. Hidden deep inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the Kanheri Caves hold more than one hundred rock cut Buddhist caves carved by hand into a massive basalt hillside. The earliest were created in the 1st century BCE, long before Mumbai became the city we know today.

Over nearly a thousand years, this forested hill grew into a lively centre of Buddhist learning, meditation and community life. Monks lived, studied and taught here, supported by traders, kings and ordinary families of ancient western India. Your guide is an expert in Buddhism and Buddhist history, so you will understand the people and teachings behind the stone.

Walk along peaceful forest trails to the grand Chaitya hall with its tall carved pillars and an ancient stupa still standing at its heart. Admire detailed carvings of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, and step into simple monk cells and quiet meditation spaces. See the clever ancient rainwater system of channels and cisterns that still survives today.

Along the way, you will hear stories of how the monks lived, what they studied and why this hill was chosen as their home. The pace is relaxed, with time to ask questions, take photos and sit quietly in spaces built for silence. Every turn of the trail reveals another carved doorway or hidden cell.

Finish with wide views over the green canopy of the national park, where the city seems to disappear. It is a rare chance to experience Mumbai through its forests, its history and its stillness. This is a side of the city that most visitors, and even many locals, have never seen.
