What you can expect

  • The loop route starts from the hamlet of Prato delle Macinaie, where cars can be parked in free or paid spaces. The hike will take place mainly within the majestic beech forests that cover Mount Amiata up to its summit, and along the route there will be opportunities to see and discuss various distinctive features of this mountain, from a geological, botanical and mining perspective. The story of this fascinating place will be interspersed with stunning landscapes and views of nature, culminating once we reach the summit of the mountain, at 1,732 meters above sea level. The route is not particularly exposed and therefore does not present any obvious risk factors. However, the surface of the trails, which are mostly well-trodden, features some uneven and steep sections, which are factors to bear in mind in order to tackle the hike with caution, as is the fact that the surface may be slippery due to the presence of damp leaves. For this reason, closed-toe shoes with a rigid, lugged sole must be worn, i.e. trekking boots (which are suitable in both winter and summer) or trail shoes (suitable only in summer), while sneakers are absolutely not suitable. In light of the above, the trek is considered suitable for those with at least a basic level of fitness for long-distance walking. It is not particularly suitable for children unless they have a certain aptitude for walking and are also accustomed to covering distances of 15 km or more in a single day. The route is classified as type “E” (hiking). The route is a loop and therefore starts and ends at the same place, which will also be where the cars are parked. Depending on the time of year, the start is scheduled between 10:00 am and 10:30 am, and the total duration of the trek is approximately five and a half hours, including the lunch break. Unless circumstances dictate otherwise, lunch will take place at the summit of the mountain and can be arranged as a packed lunch or at one of the shelters located there. Everyone can make their own arrangements, informing the Guide of their preference in advance. The cost of transportation and lunch (whether a packed lunch or at a mountain hut) is the responsibility of each participant and will be added to the cost of the guided trek (led by a licensed and insured environmental hiking guide).
