Discover San Ángel, one of Mexico City’s most charming historic neighborhoods. With cobblestone streets, colorful walls, old mansions, peaceful plazas, and an artisan spirit, this area feels like a small picturesque town hidden inside the city.
During this walking tour, you will explore San Ángel through its history, architecture, religious heritage and artisan traditions. We will begin at Parque de La Bombilla, where you will get a brief introduction to the area and understand why this part of Mexico City has such a distinct character.
From there, we will walk into the historic heart of San Ángel, visiting places such as Templo del Carmen, Plaza San Jacinto, San Jacinto Church, and Casa del Obispo. Along the way, you will hear stories about the neighborhood’s colonial past, its old mansions, its peaceful squares, and the details that make San Ángel feel so different from other parts of the city.
You will also discover why San Ángel is one of the best areas in Mexico City for Mexican craftsmanship. As we walk, I will point out artisan shops and galleries where you can find textiles, ceramics, decorative objects, jewelry, clothing, and home décor. Some pieces follow traditional techniques, while others come from collaborations between artisans and contemporary designers.
The tour does not include dedicated shopping time, but I will share useful context and recommendations so you can return after the experience and explore these places at your own pace.
Please note that Saturdays in San Ángel are especially lively and crowded because of Bazar del Sábado, artisan street markets, and artists selling their work around Plaza San Jacinto. This means more shopping options, but also many more people. On weekdays and Sundays, the neighborhood is usually quieter and easier to walk, shop and enjoy at a calmer pace.
The experience ends at Mercado del Carmen, a gastronomy and design market, where you will enjoy a guided tasting of three mezcals paired with a Mexican bite, such as quesadillas or guacamole. As a travel journalist who has reported on mezcal and female mezcal masters in Oaxaca, I will share a clear and accessible introduction to mezcal, including how it is made, its different types, and its cultural importance.
The tour ends around 2 pm. I highly recommend planning extra time in San Ángel after the experience. You can stay for lunch at the market, visit one of the local restaurants recommended during the walk, or return to the artisan galleries, shops, and bazaars to explore more calmly on your own.
