Begin your walking tour at Plaza Tolsá, a 19th-century square surrounded by El Palacio de Minería and El Palacio de Correos, some of the best examples of neoclassical and eclectic architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Walk on some of the oldest streets in the city, where the layout of the houses follows the course of the ancient canals that crossed the Aztec capital. Visit several churches and chapels dating back to the 16th century. Among these, see El Templo de la Santísima Trinidad, one of the nicest examples of the Mexican Churrigueresque, said to have been one of the favorite temples of the Empress Charlotte.
Arrive at Barrio La Merced and visit one of the oldest foundries on the continent, the oldest registered house in Mexico City, and finally walk in one of the oldest public markets, which is covered with murals by Diego Rivera’s students.
Return to the University Quartier and immerse yourself in 30,000 square meters of murals by Diego Rivera and Siqueiros, among another dozen artists. Take your time and look for the first portrait of Frida Kahlo painted by Rivera.
Later, walk over a replica of the Puente de Roldán, a once-vital cross over the Acequia Real, the main canal connecting the center of the city with the lake to the south. End your tour in the Zócalo square, where you will discover the ruins of the main Aztec temple.
