Discover one of Meteora's most historic and lesser-known hiking routes, following the footsteps of the first hermit monks who settled among these towering rock formations centuries ago.
Starting from the village of Kastraki, we follow a scenic circular trail around the imposing Holy Spirit Rock (Agio Pnevma), one of the most iconic landmarks of Meteora. Along the way, hidden paths reveal ancient hermit shelters, secluded viewpoints, and traces of the ascetic life that flourished here long before the great monasteries were built.
A highlight of the experience is the historic hermitage associated with Varnavas, the first known hermit of Meteora, who established a small chapel within a cave on Holy Spirit Rock during the 10th century. This site is widely regarded as the birthplace of Meteora's monastic tradition and offers a fascinating insight into the origins of the region's spiritual heritage.
As we continue along the trail, we visit the famous Monks' Prison, a cave once used by hermits for solitude and spiritual practice, as well as the hermitage of Agios Georgios Mandilas (Saint George Mandilas). Here, a unique local tradition continues to this day, with villagers climbing the rock each year to offer colorful scarves in honor of the Saint.
The route culminates with spectacular panoramic views from Holy Spirit Rock. From this privileged vantage point, the village of Kastraki lies below, while the monasteries of Meteora, the Thessalian Plain, and the distant Pindus Mountains create an unforgettable landscape stretching to the horizon.
More than a simple hike, this experience is a journey through nature, history, spirituality, and local tradition — an authentic exploration of Meteora beyond the famous monasteries.
