As a trained architect, passionate about the city and its evolution, and having lived here for several years, I invite you to take a fresh look at the city of Marseille.
Through the writings of researchers, sociologists, historians, novelists, and postcards photographed at different times, we'll build bridges between writing and images for a few hours to observe the evolution of the Phocaean city together. As we walk through the city, each stop lets us read a text and analyze a photograph I've selected.
Belvedere comes from the Italian word Bello da vedere, literally meaning “what is beautiful to see.” This word has come to mean a promontory that offers us a viewpoint, and I invite you to discover Marseille through different Belvederes. I also suggest looking for the different clues that help us understand the city's evolution through the topography, architectural details, and the surrounding landscape.
