This is an impoverished urban district near central Maputo. It was created in the colonial era as a township for Mozambican workers who were not allowed to live in the center of the city. No consideration was given to infrastructure, water and sanitation or community facilities. With impermeable soils, seasonal floods cause the overflowing of latrine pits and the rapid spread of diseases. It was the historical home of many of Mozambique's important cultural and political figures, the resistance movement that fought for independence.
