White Horse Temple was built in 68 AD, the 11th year of the Yongping reign of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The construction of the Longmen Grottoes first commenced during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty, around 493 AD. The project continued through successive dynasties, including the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui and Tang dynasties. Stretching approximately one kilometer from north to south, the grottoes presently house 2,345 caves and niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 stone inscriptions.
