What you can expect

Explore Luanda: History, Culture & Local Life

Step into Luanda’s living story on a guided walk through its landmarks, streets, and squares. From colonial architecture to vibrant markets, each stop reveals a new side of Angola’s capital.

Cidade Alta & Igreja de Jesus:
Begin in Cidade Alta (Upper City), the political and historic heart of Luanda. Walk among pastel government buildings, grand staircases, and quiet colonial streets. Visit the Igreja de Jesus, a Baroque jewel.

Museu de Antropologia (≈ 10 min walk):
A gateway to Angola’s many cultures: Bakongo, Ovimbundu, Ambundu, Khoisan, and more. See carved masks, musical instruments, and daily tools that reflect spiritual beliefs and traditional life.

Fortaleza de São Miguel (≈ 15 min walk):
Built in 1576, this fortress was Luanda’s first line of defense and later a hub of the slave trade. Today, it houses the Military History Museum. From its ramparts, enjoy sweeping views of Baía de Luanda and Ilha do Cabo.

Church of Our Lady of Remedies (≈ 18 min walk):
One of Luanda’s oldest churches, founded in the 1600s and restored across centuries, preserving layers of colonial history.

Rua dos Mercadores (≈ 2 min walk):
Stroll down one of the city’s oldest streets, once a bustling center of ivory, wine, rubber, and slave trade. Today it remains alive with art, and echoes of Luanda’s mercantile past.

Tribunal Ana Joaquina (≈ 10 min walk):
A neoclassical landmark from the 19th century, built by Ana Joaquina dos Santos e Silva, one of Angola’s wealthiest and most controversial women, tied to the slave trade. Now the Provincial Court, it’s admired from the outside.

Palácio de Ferro (≈ 2 min walk):
A masterpiece of 19th-century iron architecture, attributed to Gustave Eiffel. Prefabricated in Europe and shipped to Angola, its airy design contrasts with heavy colonial buildings. Today it hosts exhibitions and cultural projects.

Largo do Kinaxixi (≈ 16 min walk):
A lively square centered around the statue of Queen Nzinga (Rainha Nzinga), a fearless 17th-century ruler who resisted Portuguese colonization. A place where locals gather to relax, meet, and reflect on Angola’s proud history.
