In spring, the water shifts from emerald green to golden-orange and red, a result of algae, pigment-rich bacteria, and other microorganisms thriving in the mineral-laden water. By midsummer, lower chlorophyll levels allow brilliant shades of orange, red, and yellow to dominate.
