Leave Longyearbyen behind and follow a gradual route over Arctic tundra towards a wide plateau with fantastic views over Adventfjorden and the surrounding mountains. Along the way, learn about Longyearbyen’s mining past and see traces of the old Mine 1A, also known as “the American mine”, which played an important role in the early coal history of the settlement.
As you gain height, the view opens up more and more, and you really feel how close the wild Arctic landscape is to the town. At the top, take a well-deserved break, enjoy a simple outdoor snack or lunch, and soak in the silence and panorama.
On clear days, see far along the fjord system and across to surrounding mountains. In summer, this area often has grazing Svalbard reindeer, birdlife, and patches of surprisingly colorful Arctic flowers dotting the tundra. It’s a perfect first hike in Svalbard: short and accessible, but with a real Arctic atmosphere.
Please note that Blomsterdalshøgda lies outside the local “safe area” and is in a zone where polar bear protection is required. Your guide carries the necessary safety equipment at all times and is trained in Arctic risk management.
