What you can expect
Begin your journey south toward the Sekotong Peninsula. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours. Enjoy the scenic coastal views as you pass through Lembar and enter the quiet, hilly roads of Sekotong. Meet your local boatman at Pelabuhan Tembowong. This is the main gateway to the Secret Gilis. Board a private traditional outrigger (perahu) to start your island-hopping adventure.
Your first stop is Gili Rengit. This uninhabited island is famous for its vibrant marine life and is one of Lombok's best spots for swimming with sea turtles. Snorkel along the northern reef where sea fans are abundant and the water is crystal clear.
A short 10-minute boat ride takes you to Gili Layar. This island is less crowded than the northern Gilis (Trawangan/Meno) and offers some of the best-preserved coral in Lombok. Look for the rare blue coral and schools of clownfish dancing among the anemones.
Head to Gili Gede, the largest of the secret islands. Unlike the others, this island has a local population and several eco-resorts. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at Kokomo Resort or The High Dive. After lunch, take a short walk through the local village to experience the authentic island life culture of the Sasak people.
Gili Asahan is a tiny, uninhabited sandbar that only emerges during low tide. There are no trees or buildings here — just a strip of white sand in the middle of a turquoise ocean. It's the ultimate spot for drone photography or a surreal “walking on water” experience. Timing is crucial; your boatman will adjust the schedule based on the day's tide to ensure the sandbar is visible.
As the sun begins to dip, cruise back toward Tembowong Harbor. The golden hour light over the Sekotong hills and the silhouette of Mount Agung in the distance (on clear days) is spectacular. Arrive back at the harbor, rinse off, and begin your drive back to Mataram or Senggigi.
