Demonstration of the Vejigante Mask Our expert guide will give you a detailed explanation of how the traditional Vejigante mask is made, the materials used, and its cultural significance in Loíza. You will also have the chance to take photos with this colorful and iconic mask. Vejigante masks are traditionally crafted from papier-mâché or coconut shells and are hand-painted with bright, vivid colors. They often feature horns and exaggerated facial expressions, symbolizing a mix of African, Spanish, and Caribbean influences. In Loíza, the Vejigante is a central figure in festivals like Carnaval and the Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol, representing a playful spirit, the triumph over evil, and the preservation of Afro-Puerto Rican heritage. Interacting with the mask is more than just a photo opportunity—it’s an invitation to connect with the rich history, folklore, and vibrant culture of Loíza.
