What you can expect

Explore the Kwanza River: Nature, Community & Local Life

Join us on a journey along one of Angola’s great rivers, where calm waters, lively communities, history and natural beauty meet.

• Slavery Museum:
Begin your day with a view into Angola’s past: this museum memorializes the enslaved people. It’s a place of remembrance, raw history that shapes modern identity.

• Miradouro da Lua (one of the most visited attractions in Angola):
From the height of this cliff-viewpoint, enjoy sweeping vistas over the earth’s eroded rock faces, shaped by water and wind. The contrast of red clay, white sand and blue sky offers breathtaking scenery, perfect for photos and quiet moments.

• Calumbo & the River Communities:
Head to Calumbo, a region along the Kwanza River. Here you’ll see how fishing, small-scale agriculture, and river trade are integral to local life. Communities live from the river, boats, nets, river banks. Calumbo also carries memory: there are memorials to the “Massacre of Calumbo” (1961), and traditional local culture is strong here.

• Restaurante Chilala for Lunch by the River:
This restaurant is built almost on the water itself, crafted from, recyclable materials. Chilala is all about local flavors: its specialty is grilled fish, and seafood. But the must-try dish here is Mufete, an Angolan classic of grilled fish with beans, plantains, sweet potato, cassava, and palm oil sauce.

• Boat Ride on the Kwanza River:
After or before lunch, board a boat for a tranquil ride along the river. Observe green riverbanks, native birds, perhaps even crocodiles. Watch children playing, fishermen working, the changing landscape, from dense vegetation to calmer shores. It’s a sensory way to feel the rhythm of river life.

• “China Town” Luanda (Industrial & Commercial Market Experience):
On the return leg, visit China Town: a large commercial complex built by Chinese business interests. You’ll see how trade, import, export, and diversity come together: products from China, Angola, other countries; bargaining; busy people; energy and commerce.
